CHANTING & SANSKTRIT MANTRA W/KIRTAN
Sunday July 16, 3-4:30
This workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning how to chant a few well-known mantras. We will first start on the simple Sanskrit syllables linked to the energy centers or Chakras, and then we will study beautiful short mantras that lead to a deepening of our spiritual lives. We will spend more time lifting the vibrational energy with song (kirtan) this time around.
MANTRAS AND CHAKRAS
All living beings on this earth, plants, animals, and human beings are made of the elements of earth, water, fire, air, ether, individual consciousness, and universal consciousness.
These elements are linked to the energy centers or Chakras along the spine. These Chakras are also linked to the energy channels: right, left, and center. These energy channels are brought to life by the breath. They communicate with the Chakras and so help to open them and bring them to life and light, bringing life energy or Prana to the whole body.
Short Sanskrit syllables are linked to the elements and awaken the Chakras, bringing life to the whole being.
“LAM” is linked to the Muladhara, the base Chakra, the earth Chakra, at the base of the spine. Chanting it, we are aware of all the gifts we receive from the earth.
“VAM” is linked to the Swadisthana, the pelvic Chakra, a little higher on the spine, it is the water Chakra. Chanting it, we are aware of the precious gift of purifying and life giving water in all its forms.
“RAM” is linked to the Manipura, the solar Chakra, in the middle of the spine, behind the navel. It is linked to the sun, to light, fire, energy. Chanting it we are aware of the energy and life we receive from the sun and from its light.
“YAM” is linked to the Anahata Chakra, the heart Chakra, located behind the heart. It is linked to air, and so to the breath. It is the seat of love, compassion, openness to the beauty of the world. Chanting it with awareness of the breath, opens our whole being to the beauty of the whole universe and to the love that pervades it.
“HAM” is linked to the Vishudhi Chakra, the throat Chakra, located behind the center of the throat. It is linked to ether, that pervaded everything but is not touched by anything. One of its meaning is: purity of mind. It is related to our ability to communicate thoughts through the voice, and to our ability to relate to the whole universe.
“OM” is the sacred vowel per excellence, linked to the Ajna Chakra, located between the eyebrows and deep in the center of the brain, “the eye of the soul”, symbol of the awareness of the Self. Chanting it is a powerful opening to spiritual life.
“SOHAM” linked to the Sahasrara Chakra, located just above the crown of the head; it is linked to the awareness of the eternal and indestructible unity of the whole universe. Chanting it removes all impurities related to the individual self. Please note that the Chakras can be presented and explained in many different ways.
